Hand Rehabilitation

At Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, occupational therapists provide hand therapy services to people with a variety of conditions, including:

• Fractures
• Cumulative trauma injuries
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Tendonitis
• Sports injuries
• Burns
• Nerve injuries
• Sprains and strains
• Post-surgical repairs
• Tendon/nerve injuries
• Reconstructive surgery due to disease or injury
• Arthritis
• Other rheumatic diseases, such as scleroderma or systemic lupus erythematosus

Working closely with your physician, our occupational therapists are members of a team of health care professionals who will guide hand patients through a comprehensive hand rehabilitation program. Upon a thorough evaluation, the therapist may provide one or more of the following:

• Education about your diagnosis
• Treatment options
• Wound care
• Exercises to improve range of motion and strengthen your hand and/or increase its function
• Ways to protect your joints and conserve energy
• Use of assistive devices
• Analysis of your work environment to prevent re-injury or difficulty on the job
• Fitting and training in the use of an artificial arm or hand, when appropriate
